Print size chart — every standard size with pixel requirements

Photo prints, ISO A paper, canvas, sublimation products, large format signage, and social media — all standard sizes in one place. Pixel requirements calculated at both 150 DPI (canvas/fabric) and 300 DPI (photos/close print) so you always know exactly what you need before you start a project.

How to read this chart

Each table shows minimum pixel requirements at two DPI levels:

300 DPI Photo prints, brochures, business cards, phone cases, metal panels — anything viewed up close.
150 DPI Canvas wall art, polyester fabric, mouse pads, cushions — surfaces with texture or viewed from distance.

If your image meets the 300 DPI column, it will print sharply on any medium. If it only meets the 150 DPI column, it is suitable for canvas and fabric but not for close-range photo prints. Use the Pixel to Print calculator to check your exact image against any specific size and medium.

📷 Standard photo print sizes

The most commonly ordered photo sizes, used by photo labs, Walgreens, CVS, Snapfish, Shutterfly, and all major print-on-demand services. The standard DPI for photo prints is 300. The aspect ratio column shows whether your camera's native ratio will fit without cropping.

📄 ISO A series paper sizes

The ISO 216 standard defines the A series of paper sizes used internationally (most countries except the US and Canada). Each size is exactly half the area of the previous one — A4 is half of A3, A3 is half of A2, and so on. All sizes share the same √2:1 aspect ratio.

US equivalent sizes: US Letter (8.5×11 in / 2550×3300 px @ 300 DPI) is close to A4 but slightly wider and shorter. US Legal is 8.5×14 in. Tabloid / Ledger is 11×17 in — close to A3 but slightly smaller.

🖼 Canvas print sizes

Canvas prints are viewed from a distance (typically 4+ feet), so the industry standard DPI is 150 DPI — not 300. The 150 DPI column is the relevant target here. The 300 DPI column is shown for reference only — it represents a higher standard that canvas printing does not require and most printers do not use.

Template sizes are for the full design area. Add 0.25–0.5 in bleed outside the visible area for edge-to-edge designs to prevent white borders if the transfer shifts slightly.

📢 Large format and signage

Large format printing is viewed from greater distances, which dramatically reduces the minimum DPI required. The minimum perceivable DPI scales with viewing distance — see the viewing distance table in the DPI guide for the science behind this. The DPI column below shows the industry-standard target, not the 300 DPI photo standard.

Large format file sizes: At 100–150 DPI, large format files can still be very large. A 4×8 ft banner at 100 DPI is nearly 3456×6912 pixels. At 150 DPI, it would be 5184×10368 pixels — a 160 MB+ TIFF. Work in the correct DPI from the start rather than upscaling. Many large format shops accept files at 72 DPI if submitted at full size, or higher DPI at proportionally reduced size.

📱 Social media image sizes (2026)

Social media dimensions are not print DPI — they are pixel dimensions for screen display. This table is included because many designers create for both social and print simultaneously, and knowing how a social asset translates to print helps you decide whether to upscale before ordering prints. Social to print: A 1080×1080 Instagram image at 300 DPI prints at only 3.6×3.6 inches — too small for most photo prints. At 150 DPI (canvas), it prints at 7.2×7.2 inches. If you want to print a social media image larger, you need AI upscaling. Check the AI upscaling section in the DPI guide for recommended tools.

Frequently asked questions

How many pixels do I need for a 4×6 photo print?

For a sharp 4×6 inch photo print at 300 DPI, you need a minimum of 1200×1800 pixels. At 150 DPI (suitable for fabric or canvas), a 4×6 requires 600×900 pixels. The 4×6 format perfectly matches the 3:2 aspect ratio of most DSLR and mirrorless cameras, so no cropping is needed when printing from full-frame or crop-sensor RAW files.

What pixel size do I need for an A4 print at 300 DPI?

An A4 sheet (210×297 mm / 8.27×11.69 inches) requires 2480×3508 pixels at 300 DPI. This is the standard for professional print-quality documents, brochures, and certificates. At 150 DPI, you need 1240×1754 pixels.

What is the minimum pixel size for a 16×20 canvas?

For a 16×20 inch canvas print at the industry standard of 150 DPI, you need a minimum of 2400×3000 pixels. This is the correct target — not 300 DPI — because canvas is an industry standard of 150 DPI, due to the fabric texture and typical viewing distance. At 100 DPI (minimum acceptable), you need 1600×2000 pixels.

What is the correct Instagram image size in 2026?

For Instagram feed posts in 2026: 1080×1080px (square 1:1), 1080×1350px (portrait 4:5 — the highest-performing format), or 1080×566px (landscape 1.91:1). For Stories and Reels: 1080×1920px (9:16). Always upload at 1080px width minimum to prevent compression. Instagram's new tall grid (3:4) means portrait formats now show more prominently in profile grids as of early 2025.

Can I print a social media image? Will it be good quality?

It depends on the print size. A 1080×1080 Instagram image at 300 DPI only prints at 3.6×3.6 inches — a small photo print. At 150 DPI for canvas, it prints at 7.2×7.2 inches. To print at common larger sizes (16×20, 24×36), you need AI upscaling. Tools like Topaz Photo AI or Magnific AI can upscale 4× with good results. Use the Pixel to Print calculator to check your specific image against your target size before ordering.
